What changes in Swiss health insurance for 2027

Robert Kolar on the 2027 premium letter: the four figures to find in it, the 30 November deadline, and the three levers that move your bill — deductible, insurance model, and splitting basic and supplementary between insurers.

  2. Deadlines

Supplementary insurance: notice is usually due by 30 September

Most supplementary contracts need three months' notice to the end of the year, which means 30 September; terms differ, so check yours. Cancel only once a new insurer has accepted you in writing — supplementary insurers can decline you on health grounds.

  3. Newcomers

New to Switzerland: the 3-month deadline

New residents have three months from registering with their commune to take out basic insurance; on time, cover applies from the registration date. Late, it starts only when you enrol, with a premium surcharge, and the canton can assign you an insurer.
