Basic health insurance in Switzerland
Basic health insurance in Switzerland covers treatment costs for:
- Maternity coverage (without deductible)
It is mandatory for all Swiss residents, and you are required to take out the basic insurance policy within the first three months of your arrival in Switzerland.
There are dozens of authorized health insurance companies to choose from. They are all obliged to offer the same benefits, with one major difference being the cost. You are required to pay the individual premium, which depends on the health insurance company, your age, place of residence, and deductible.
The deductible is the amount of money (CHF 300 yearly) that patients have to pay for medical treatment before their insurance company starts covering any expenses. There is one more fee to pay, called retention fee, which amounts for 10% up to max. 700 CHF and 350 CHF for Children of any treatment cost.
In case you are dissatisfied with your insurance provider, or you wish to change your policy, you have the right to do so. You can change your Swiss health insurance at the end of each year, just make sure to inform your insurer by the 30th of November and cancel the contract for the following year.
Supplementary health insurance in Switzerland
Although basic health insurance covers various treatments, you can still opt to take out supplementary insurance for any additional needs, including but not limited to:
- Dental care
- Glasses and contact lenses
- Non insurance medication
- Transportation (basic pays only 50% up to 500.-)
- Alternative medicines and treatments
- Gym membership and health promotion.
- Hospital Insurance (General-ward, Semi Private, Private)
- Physiotherapy ( paid by basic insurance KVG)
- Medical treatments abroad
- Hospital stays in a private room
This type of health insurance can be obtained from the same or separate insurance company, at an additional cost.
